Drums can be divided into two broad categories, acoustic drum kits and electronic drum sets.
An acoustic drum kit is what you see played on stage or in music videos. It produces sound by the drum head vibrating the air.
An electronic drum set usually has rubber pads instead of drums, which don’t make sound themselves. A trigger pickup detects when the pad is hit and sends that signal to a drum module, which generates the sound electronically from recorded drum sounds.
Rock Band™ and Guitar Hero™ World Tour include a very simple electronic drum set which combine pads, triggers, and a drum module in one package which then tells the game which pad was hit. This is fine for an introduction to drumming, but really has little to do with playing acoustic drums.
Electronic vs Acoustic
Acoustic drums are the real deal. There is nothing quite like sitting down at a kit and losing yourself in the music. But they can only sound like one instrument, drums.
Electronic drums let you produce many different types of sound, by using different drum sounds in the drum module. This is why they were used heavily in the 80’s synth music scene. But sets under $1,000 typically use rubber pads which don’t feel anything like drum heads. The more expensive sets use mesh heads, which are heads made from a durable mesh material. They feel very similar to real heads, but are virtually silent because the air moves through the mesh.
